Moviegoers in Rugby will see a new face on the Lyric Theater thanks to work being done through grants from the North Dakota Department of Commerce and the Rugby Job Development Authority.

Rugby Mayor and Friends of the Lyric President Sue Steinke told the Tribune, "We were awarded the grant last January. We found out we had received this grant through the Department of Commerce and the JDA matched the funds of that grant."

Steinke said the state grant totaled $10,000, with the JDA matching that amount with another $10,000.

Work commences on the Lyric Theater’s marquee earlier this week. The new marquee is expected to be completed by the end of May.

"So, 2018, we were in the process of getting bids," she continued, "And so now we're starting to do some of the work. There'll be a digital display for the movies on the marquee, and the marquee will get refaced."

Steinke said preliminary work was being done this week on the Lyric's faade, including removing rotted wood and rust.

A crane from Indigo Signworks, Inc., Fargo, was parked in front of the theater Monday morning as workers took down the old marquee and cleaned up the surface behind the sign. Steinke said local contractors would be used for other phases of the project.

"Where possible, such as electrical, and fabrication local vendors are being used," Steinke said.

"So," Steinke continued, "Over the next couple of months you'll see a new marquee. It should be finished by the end of May."

In addition to adding visual appeal to Main Street, the new marquee will have other benefits.

"It will be nice for the volunteers not to have to manually replace the letters on the marquee, especially in the winter," Steinke said.
