County board learns of December jail profit

During a regular meeting Tuesday morning, Pierce County Commissioners learned of a profitable December at the Heart of America Correctional & Treatment Center.

HACTC Administrator Mike Graner informed the board that the facility accrued a profit of $10,552.69 that month. The year-to-date loss for 2018 was estimated at $112,000. Graner said the facility should "see some consistency going forward".

Graner said there are 97 inmates currently housed at HACTC, which matched January's average daily population.

The board approved HACTC bills and financials.

Other actions

- The board approved abatements for Eugene & Ruth Stanley, Melvin Schumacker, Jewel Miller, Terry Bundy, James Brossart and Father's Farm.

- The board approved payment of their portion of the remaining balance on the Heart of America Library elevator project. The county would pay $7,000, the City of Rugby $6,000 and the Library the remainder. The Rugby City Council voted to approve payment of their portion during their regular meeting Monday evening.

- The board approved transfers of $17,000 from the Wireless fund to 9-1-1 and $4,000 from the general fund to Community Service.

- The board approved appointing Wanda Follman, David Kraft, Dawn Hauck, Mike Heidlebaugh and Donna Hager as members of a county committee for school district annexation, dissolution and reorganization.

- The board approved the purchase of 50 66-inch road markers to be used on Farm-to-Market right of ways.

- The board approved a motion to submit an application to sponsor Community Development Block Grant funding for a low-income housing rehabilitation project at Courtyard Apartments.

- The board approved increasing the assessment for blading and snow removal for townships that have motor graders from $185 per certified mile to $205.

- The board approved January meeting minutes, bills, financial statements and treasurers checks.
