Area students attend FBLA National Leadership Conference

August 3, 2018
Pierce County Tribune

Members of the Rugby High School and Harvey High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapters attended the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Baltimore, MD, June 28-July 1. This year there were 308 students and chaperones from North Dakota in attendance as well as 12,000 students from FBLA chapters around the United States, Puerto Rico, China and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The most exciting aspect of the conference is the competitive events program. Students have the opportunity to test the business skills they've learned in the classroom and choose from over 52 individual, team, and chapter events. Daniel Kearns competed in the Securities and Investments event, Jenna Wangler and Amber Schmaltz competed in the Publication Design event and Harvey students Karlie Dockter and Hannah Felche competed in the Emerging Business Issues event.

The culmination of the competitive events program is the awards ceremony where winners are recognized for their accomplishments. In addition to the competitive events program, students had the opportunity to attend workshops, network, and do quite a bit of site seeing. We visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum, Baltimore National Aquarium, went on the Moonlight Monument Tour, took pictures at the Lincoln Memorial, were bussed to Mt. Vernon and Arlington National Cemetery, toured the Capitol (listened to legislative sessions), rode water taxis and enjoyed the Inter Harbor Water Tour. Students in their free time were able to attend workshops, participate on the March of Dimes Walk, visit the exhibits, check out the market place, sit in on final events, dine at the various local restaurants and do some shopping at the local shops.
