50 years of weight loss and camaraderie

Rugby T.O.P.S. celebrates anniversary

In 1948, a new weight loss support group was formed. As a non-profit, it was different than most others that were starting to appear and older than many large profit ones. As it expanded and began becoming popular, different groups would appear in different states and eventually in Canada. Now the group that planted itself in Rugby years ago is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

T.O.P.S., or "Take Off Pounds Seriously," is a weekly support group that gives those interested in losing weight or simply maintaining it a chance to work alongside others who want to help them. Weekly members will weigh in privately before discussing goals, health and nutrients, and other relevant information with a group to help reach what they want.

"Were really proud, said Jennifer Ostrem. We thought it was quite the accomplishment for our little chapter in Rugby."

The chapter has a variety of members from those wanting to lose weight to those simply working to maintain where they are. According to Ostrem, there are members who have been in T.O.P.S. for 20 or more years.

While the group doesnt have anything planned for the big anniversary, they did recently hold their annual picnic. At the picnic, members get together, celebrate their accomplishments, and vote for officers. They typically celebrate year-to-year accomplishments.

The group is open to all, according to Ostrem. Anyone is welcome.
