Pickle-ball getting started in county

June 1, 2018
Pierce County Tribune

Pickle-Ball may be the fastest growing sport in the country. We'd like to make it the fastest growing sport in the COUNTY! Ten adults have been "learning the strokes" at the Wolford School, the Rugby high school students have been playing in their physical education classes, and Rugby has its very own pickle-ball court at the South Side Park. The sport is very popular in Arizona, Florida, and Texas.

But, what exactly is Pickle-Ball? Well, it's a cross between ping pong, badminton, and tennis.

The racket is a paddle, the court is the same size as a badminton court, and the ball is similar to a whiffle ball. There is not as much running as in tennis, either. Probably the most difficult part of the game is the scoring!

A game of pickle-ball in progress.

Pickle-Ball was created on Bainbridge Island near Seattle in 1965, so we are quite a bit "behind the times" in getting started here. The inventors, Joel Pritchard William Bell, and Barney McCallum, wanted a game that the entire family could play in their driveway or on a hard surface in their back yards.

Adults or youth groups interested in playing or getting lessons: In the Wolford area, call Diane Fritel (701-208-0977); In Rugby, contact Dave (701-263-1500) or Cryslynn (701-776-6188) Walker.
