Summer fun from North Star Community Credit Union

May 4, 2018
Bonnie Remmick - Tribune Reporter , Pierce County Tribune

As of June 12, Rugby children will have some new and exciting options for summer fun around town.

Barbara Welk, manager of North Star Community Credit Union in Rugby announced a program that will give any child in Rugby that want or need one, a new or refurbished bike. Helmets and knee pads will also be available. The NSCCU will also be hosting the Bike and Safety program at their location.

"We want to get the kids outside playing this summer," said Welk. "What better way than to have a bike to ride? Rugby has great bike paths and safe places to ride. The Rugby Police and the Sheriff's office will provide this training by educating the kids on safety tips and bike safety awareness at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12."

Tammy Olson, also a NSCCU employee, and her husband found several good bikes abandoned at the city dump. The idea for refurbishing bikes was planted. It was from there that she discussed with other employees, that these bikes just needed some love and attention, and they could go to new homes to kids that needed one. From this idea, Olson and Welk organized volunteers to work on the bikes, and collect them. Word started to get out around Rugby and soon bikes were being donated. They are accepting donations, either old or new bikes from local residents up to June 11.

"We also know that after the city wide garage sale which is on May 12, there may be some bikes that didn't sell that people might want to donate," said Olson. "We will arrange for picking up equipment if needed."

Community members that want to donate bikes, helmets or knee pads are encouraged to call Olson at the credit union at 776 5869. The NSCCU is located at 241 Hwy 2 in Rugby.

"North Star Community Credit Union likes to do things for the communities we live in," said Welk.

Olson added, "It's all about people helping people. Let's make summer fun for the kids."
