Panther baseball springs into action

April 27, 2018
Bonnie Remmick - Tribune Reporter , Pierce County Tribune

The weather has not been kind to the area's varsity baseball teams this spring. Several games have had to be canceled or rescheduled due to the snow refusing to leave. Thursday, April 19 opened the long awaited Panthers Region 5 baseball team's first game.

The Rugby Panthers didn't disappoint the opener's small crowd the first day of baseball, though, against Bottineau at Northern Lights Field in Rugby. Weather had delayed almost all games statewide, but Rugby's field seemed to dry out ahead of other locations. The Panthers prevailed over the Bottineau Braves in the opener at Rugby's Northern Lights field 11-1. The game got off to a slow start for both sides. It felt like a season opener and players were waking up after a long winter.

At the bottom of the second the Panthers scored their first run, and the Braves scored their first and only run in the top of the third inning. At the end of the fifth inning, it was Panthers 11 and Braves 1. Rugby stood 1-0.

Panther Landen Foster pitched three innings in the Bottineau game, striking out a bold 7. Panther Isaiah Johnson pitched two innings with no hits. Against the Braves, Panther Seth Jaeger scored two runs, and Devan Michaels was at bat 3 times and had 3 runs.

The next Panthers game was Monday, April 23 against the North Star Bearcats, which was also played at Rugby. Again the Panthers did not fail to satisfy the home crowd-which had doubled since the first game. The Panthers beat the Bearcats 111, winning two to start the season. The Panthers had two 10- run efforts in two games to start off the season.

Both Panther games were played at Northern Lights field in the region, due to the field being in better shape in Rugby, but moved to Harvey on Thursday, April 26 for the game with the Harvey-Wells County Hornets. At press time the score was not available from Thursday's game.
