Panther volleyball knocks off Lions, Lakers in region tourney; face ORCS in championship

Two Monday and Tuesday victories helped set the stage for a rematch in the championship round of the Region 6 volleyball tournament.

The Rugby Panthers knocked off the Bishop Ryan Lions Monday evening and the Des Lacs-Burlington Lakers the next night to face the Our Redeemer's Christian School Knights Thursday night.

On Monday the Panthers won three sets-25-21, 25-16 and 25-14-against the Lions.

The next night Rugby won the first set, 27-25, but the Lakers were able to tie the series up in the second set, winning 25-18. The Panthers then won the third set, 25-16, and an extremely close fourth set, 25-23.

Maria Blessum led the Panthers in kills on both nights, netting 11 on Monday and 15 on Tuesday. Blessum also led in digs, getting 24 Tuesday evening and eight the day before. Sara Stier led in service aces, getting four on Monday and three on Tuesday. Brianna Leier led in assists on Monday with nine, and Alissa Volk led the next night with 21. Anni Stier led in blocks Monday with three, and Jacque Blessum led the next day with 11.

Last year the Knights defeated the Panthers in three sets in the championship round of the tournament and advanced to the state tournament. This year the Knights defeated the Towner-Granville-Upham Titans in three sets in the first round of the region tournament. On Tuesday the Knights won three of four sets against Lewis & Clark-Berthold.
