Panther volleyball hosts Mustangs, Mavericks

The math was in the Rugby Panthers' favor as they hosted the Surrey Mustangs Tuesday evening, and the Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood Mavericks last Thursday in the Charles Hanneman Gymnasium.

The Panthers defeated the Mustangs in three sets: 25-8, 25-15 and 25-12.

Outside hitters Sara Stier and Maria Blessum led the Panthers in both kills and digs, with a combined 16 kills and 25 digs between the two of them. Stier also led in serving aces with six on the night. Middle blocker Jacque Blessum led in blocks, and setters Alissa Volk and Brianna Leier had a combined 24 assists.

The Mustangs meanwhile had a combined six kills between outside hitter Stephenie Severson and middle blockers Hunter Fuchs and Abigail Storkson. Fuchs and setter Lauren Anderson tied for digs with one each, while Anderson also led in both aces (2) and assists (4).

Last week the Panthers defeated the Mavericks in three sets: 25-8, 26-24 and 25-21.

Maria Blessum led in both kills (14) and digs (14) for the Panthers, and Volk led in assists (9). Sara Stier led in aces (9), and Jacque Blessum led in blocks (13).

For the Mavericks, outside/rear hitter Jorie Holsten led in kills (9); defensive specialists Leah Feland and Janie Savelkoul had a combined four aces between the two of them; Feland also led in digs (17); and setter Grace Solemsaas led in assists (18).

Rugby will be engaged in a double-Panther, region showdown against Glenburn on Tuesday (Oct. 24). That matchup will be the last regular season one before the District 11 tournament and starts at 5 p.m. in Rugby.

The District 11 Tournament will take place Oct. 26, 27 and 30 at TGU Towner High School.
