Activities policy approved

October 13, 2017

The Rugby Public School District Board of Education, in a regular meeting Tuesday morning, approved the second reading of a policy that would establish a procedure for adding or eliminating an activity.

The procedure starts with the assembly of an activities review committee consisting of the school's activities director, two parents, two head coaches, two activity advisors and two school board members. The committee reviews possible additions or reductions and submits recommendations to the board.

Recommendations to add or eliminate would be based on several factors, including the number of students participating, coach availability, cost per student, total cost of the program, community support, competitiveness, the district's budget, Title IX requirements and other funding sources.

If the board approves the addition of an activity, the board will determine the level of partial financial support for the activity for a period of no more than five years. At the end of that period, the administration provides the board with the number of participants in that activity and potential costs. The board then votes whether to fully fund the program, maintain the current level of support or eliminate it.

Other actions

- The board voted to approve an agreement with RSP Associates, LLC, to do a study on district enrollment figures for the next five years. The study will cost $4,500.

The proposal was previously tabled during the board's September meeting.

- The board discussed a proposal from Public Sector Personnel Consultants for a salary study for ancillary staff; proposals for an ATM at Rugby High School; and changes taking place with the Every Student Succeeds Act.

- The board approved September meeting minutes, bills and financial reports.
