GeoDays expands to two days

September 29, 2017
Bryce Berginski - Tribune Reporter , Pierce County Tribune

Geographical Center Days has gotten bigger this year.

This year's festival has expanded, starting at 1:30 p.m. today and going throughout the day until midnight at the intersection between 2nd Street and Main Avenue in Rugby, and continuing from noon to 3 p.m. at the Prairie Village Museum the next day.

A couple of new activities have been added to this year's festival, including Touch-A-Truck which goes from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the museum. According to Chamber of Commerce Director Miriah Koenig, the event gives kids a chance to see and interact with a large vehicles they may see on the road but not always up close including farm equipment, rescue vehicles, and electrical company vehicles.

Another new activity that hasn't been seen in previous years is an "escape room." Held from 2-9 p.m., Saturday in the lot across the street from Merchants Bank, participants have a chance to solve clues to find a object hidden within the "room."

The area for events on Main Avenue on Saturday goes from the Rugby Senior Center to near City Hall, and on 2nd Street and into the alleys near Thrifty White Drug and Merchants Bank.

From 7 p.m. Saturday evening to 12 a.m. Sunday, a portion of Main Avenue will be gated off and two bands will play: Branded (7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) and Even5 (9 p.m. to 12 a.m.).

"We've kind of had to lay the day out based on power," Koenig said.

Koenig said one of the biggest challenges to GeoDays has been "learning the ropes," as she is new to the position of Chamber director.

"I really enjoy planning events," Koenig said, adding she is hopeful for good weather over the weekend.

In the event of inclement weather, the Rugby Armory is an alternate location for today's events.

Koenig said next year will mark the fifth year GeoDays has been celebrated in Rugby.
