Pops concert celebrates 50 years of musicals

April 21, 2017
Pierce County Tribune

Village Arts will begin its 50th anniversary celebration with a pops concert featuring musical hits from summer shows performed in Rugby since the beginning of the organization. The concert will include music by regional musicians who play in the Heartland Civic Orchestras and the Heart Strings youth orchestra and sing in the Heartland Civic Choir. The community music program began 18 years ago and has drawn performing musicians from a 60 mile radius.

In addition to show tunes, the orchestra will play original music by David Halvorson honoring artistic director Glory Monson's dreams for Village Arts since she began the organization in 1967. The choir will also sing a special rendition of an original song with lyrics written by former resident Eva Voeller and music by David Halvorson. Two Rugby senior high school students who began lessons in elementary school will perform solos. Both have played in community violin recitals, in the Heart Strings and in the civic orchestras. Lucas Antonson will play "Fiddle Faddle" and Abagail Volk will play the Allegro Molto from the Vivaldi violin concerto in A minor.

Village Arts invites all those who have participated in any of its projects over the past 50 years as well as audience members who always contribute to the success of every event to attend the first anniversary event of the year. The concert will be held on Sunday, April 30th at 3:00 PM at the Tilman Hovland Auditorium in Rugby High School. Tickets are available at the door.
