Julia Volk Braunagel

Julia Volk Braunagel, 94, Fessenden, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford. Her funeral will be held Friday, April 21, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Fessenden with burial at the Hillside Cemetery in Fessenden. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at the church. Arrangements with Nelson Funeral Home of Fessenden.

Julia Fischer, the second youngest of nine children of Joseph and Francisca (Hartman) Fischer, was born March 12, 1923 at Blumenfeld, ND. At an early age, she moved with her parents to rural Orrin where she grew up and attended a nearby country school. She attended the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Orrin where she was confirmed.

On November 25, 1941, Julia was married to Lawrence Volk in Orrin. They made their home near Berwick where they farmed until moving to a farm south of Fessenden in 1963. They continued to farm until retiring in 1976. Lawrence passed away July 4, 1979. On August 22, 1981 Julia was married to Anton Braunagel. They made their home in Chaseley where they lived until Anton moved to a Carrington care center due to ill health. Julia returned to her home in Fessenden where she continued to reside until entering the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in March of 2016.

She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and Altar Society of Fessenden.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann (Jerry) Bucholz of Bismarck; her son, James Volk of Fessenden; 3 grandchildren, Kevin (Debbie) Bucholz, Brian Bucholz and Cassandra (Michael) Schmitz; 3 great-grandchildren, Craig (Aundriah), Eric and Melissa Bucholz; 3 step-children, Joe Braunagel of Chaseley, Alvin Braunagel of Bismarck and Caroline Markwart of Bismarck; and sister-in-law, Delores Fischer of Fargo.

Julia was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; all of her siblings; and her step-daughter, Elizabeth Emerson.
