A 31-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning in a head-on collision with a triple-trailer semi five miles north of Drake.
The accident closed Highway 52 for three hours while the scene was cleared.
The Freightliner, driven by 32-year-old Jesse Thiele, Minot, and a 2012 Ford F-150 driven by Robert Keith, of Granville, were both westbound on Highway 52. The Ford crossed the center line and struck the Freightliner head-on, spinning counter-clockwise before coming to rest on the shoulder. The Freightliner left the road and jackknifed, with the cab overturning before coming to rest in the ditch and the triple-trailer combination coming to rest upright behind the semi.
Keith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thiele was extricated from the Freightliner and transported to Minot by air for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Both vehicles were rendered disabled.
Agencies responding to the crash included the N.D. Highway Patrol, McHenry County Sheriff's Office, Drake Fire & Rescue, Harvey Fire & Rescue, Northstar Life Flight and the Velva Ambulance Service.
