Last weekend saw four Rugby wrestlers place at the East-West tournament.
At 113 pounds, Riley Zachmeier had two decisive victories and a technical fall to advance to the championship round. There he lost by decision to Beulah-Hazen's Jeremy Leintz.
A loss to Carrington's Austin Hendrickson sent Joey Berg to the consolation rounds, where he was able to fell two opponents before losing by decision to Hettinger-Scranton's Cale Schalesky. Berg and Hendrickson faced off again in the fifth place match, where the latter won.
Riley Zachmeier wrestles a familiar opponent in New Salem-Almont's Tayt Wolding. Zachmeier took second during the East-West the tournament, falling to Beulah-Hazen's Jeremy Leintz.
Classmate Kaden Jaeger was also on the receiving end of a loss by decision in the quarterfinal round when he faced Velva's Jon Thomas. Jaeger was able to rebound in the consolation rounds and advance to the third place match, where he had a decisive victory over Killdeer's Cole Dukart.
After 5 minutes, D.J. Schneibel was felled by Killdeer's Rope Smith in quarter final action. Schneibel had a decisive victory in the consolation rounds, but then lost by fall to Hillsboro-Central Valley's Jake Connelly. Schneibel took sixth place, losing to Beau Jeffers (Bowman County-Beach) by fall.
Wrestlers traveled to St. John Tuesday.
Against Northern Lights, Rugby had three wrestlers prevail over their opponents. Zachmeier defeated Cade McCloud by technical fall, Berg defeated Gavin Parisien by fall and Aiden Jensen defeated Jakob Hudson by major decision.
Regional tournament action begins today in Stanley. A second region tournament is scheduled for next week in Rolla.
