Lena Barbara Mack, 93, of Balta, ND died Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey, ND.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 23 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Balta, ND.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a rosary and prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.
Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring.
Magdalene "Lena" Axtmann was born on January 21, 1923 in Rugby, ND. She was the daughter of Frank J and Magdelena (Bohl) Axtmann. She grew up near Balta and graduated from high school there in 1941. Lena married John A. Mack on June 7, 1943 in Balta. They lived and farmed east of Balta where ten children were born to
this union. She cared for the children and helped with the chores. She grew a large garden and with its bountiful harvests provided for the large family. She and John worked hard but found time to enjoy church and community functions in the area. Lena also worked at the Rugby Greenhouse. They moved to Harvey in 2005. John died on September 25, 2010. Lena enjoyed dancing; sewing; playing cards; working in her flower and vegetable gardens; string art, bird watching; and was an avid rock collector, having collected rocks from all 50 states and several countries.
Lena was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey and a former member of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Balta where she served in the
Altar Society and was a member of Christian Mothers. She was a member of the Wells Eagles Auxiliary in Harvey. She was also active in homemakers club, Balta PTA and VFW Auxiliary.
Lena is survived by seven sons, Blaine (Sandra) of Harvey, Neil (Corrine) of Balta, Terry (Dawn), Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Giles (Sharon) of Branson, Missouri, August (Joni) Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Frank (Deana) Mack, Bismarck, John Jr. (Alissa) of Dickinson; three daughters, Linda (fianc, Alan Whisman) Hager, Harvey, Joslyn Mack of Post Falls, Idaho and Joyce Mack of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gunda Busch of Bismarck and Rose (Mike) Durbin of Petersburg, Alaska.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Tyrone Mack; sisters, Elizabeth Gilday and Clara Hagel; brothers, Monsignor Joe Axtmann and Nick Axtmann.
