Village Arts will celebrate 17 years of Rugby Christmas concerts with rehearsals for its Sunday, December 4, 2016 concert, " I'll Be Home for Christmas. " Each year since 1999, regional musicians have gathered to perform strings, choral and symphonic music for the holidays.
Rehearsals for the oncoming concert will begin on Monday night, October 3rd in the Rugby High School Band Room. The Heart Strings Youth Orchestra is open to any student, from elementary grade to high school, who can play a stringed instrument in first position. The rehearsal start dates for each performing group are listed below.
String Orchestra: Monday, October 3, 7-8 PM.
Symphony (full) Orchestra : Monday, October 3, 8 9 PM.
Choir rehearsals: Monday, November 7, 6:30 to 8:00 PM
Heart Strings Youth Orchestra: Monday, November 7, 6:30 to 7:15 PM
One of the biggest secrets to the music program's success is its open invitation to area adult and high school musicians, even if they only have basic skills. Program director Deb Jenkins said, "We welcome everyone with an interest in music to join us. Some of our current musicians put their instruments down for forty years, but picked them up again to join the orchestra. Some of our singers have learned their parts by ear since they do not read music." Jenkins estimated more than 300 different musicians from a 60+ mile radius have participated in the concerts since Village Arts featured a handful of strings players on stage in 1997.
This year's conductors are Tilman Hovland, symphony orchestra; Andee Mattson, choir; Deb Jenkins, string and Heart Strings orchestras and Lucas Antonson, junior conductor. An original composition by David Halvorson, composer, will be performed by choir and strings.
