The Rugby High School volleyball team seems to be hitting on all gears with a 3-0 victory against Surrey on Tuesday night. The Panthers took the sets 25-5, 25-7 and 25-17, respectively, bringing their win total for the season to 20 against only 10 defeats. The Panthers have one more regular season game remaining.

From the beginning of the game the Panthers came out aggressive by attacking from the net, when needed from mid-court and with their serves. Shea Heidlebaugh even brought out her jump-serve for an audition during the second set.

This was a well-coached team victory with everyone on the team seeing some action during the match. Maria Blessum and Sara Stier lead the offensive charge with 7 kills apiece; with Lauren Kraft adding 5 kills and Ashley Schmaltz along with fellow senior Heidlebaugh adding 2 kills each. Heidlebaugh made the kills possible with a game-leading 27 assists.

Jacque Blessum showed her serving prowess with 6 aces. Kraft, Schmaltz and Heidlebaugh also had success at the service line, keeping the Surrey team off-balance most of the night with pinpoint serving. The Panthers defense was led by Stier who had 12 digs and 2 blocks. Kraft, along with her offensive output, had 7 digs. Schmaltz added 2 blocks for the Panthers.

The Panthers’ next game and final regular season game is at home on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m. against Glenburn. District play will begin Oct. 29 at Rugby’s Charlie Hanneman Gym starting at 3:00 P.M. Rugby is seeded Number One!
