U-Mary Jumper Teigen Excels in His Senior Year

Aaron Teigen finished his senior collegiate track & field season the same way he started: strong.

"It is very rare that you have the opportunity to have an athlete in your program that has the passion to excel in both the classroom and on the track, and Aaron Teigen certainly has that," University of Mary Track & Field and Cross Country coach Mike Thorson said in an email to the Tribune. "He, without a doubt, is one of the most dedicated and hard-working athletes we have had."

At the 2015 NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Sioux Falls, S.D., last month, he took third in long jump (23' 8") and fifth in triple jump (47' 6 1/4").

Aaron Teigen hits the sand at a recent collegiate track meet. Teigen took home several collegiate awards this season, including the NSIC All-Academic Team and NSIC Athlete of the Week for outdoor track & field.

The U-Mary senior and a 2010 graduate of Rugby High School was named to the 2015 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's All-Academic Team. He was also named an NSIC Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week award winner in April after winning both long jump (23' 4 3/4") and triple jump (48' 10") at a meet on the U-Mary campus.

In March, he took second in long jump and won in triple jump (48' 3/4") at the Yellow Jacket Spring Open in Spearfish, S.D. - his first meet on the season.

Teigen attributes his success on the field to one thing:

"For track, my consistency has been the biggest key. Having great practices will carry over to having great meets," Teigen said in an email to the Tribune. "My coach, Jeremy Schroeder, has also been a big part of my success. He is one of the best coaches I have had and is very knowledgeable. He encourages us to work hard, be better, and compete against the competition. I would not have had this much success without him."

Teigen missed the 2013 outdoor season due to a back injury: stress reactions in his lower lumbar vertebrae. Last year, he rolled his ankle during the outdoor season opener in Sacremento, Calif., according to an April 2014 Bismarck Tribune article.

"That whole cluster of events gave me the drive to be better and train harder," Teigen said.

Last year, Teigen was one of seven U-Mary athletes who received a Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award, which recognizes senior NSIC athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher and who are on track to graduate, according to a press release.

But Teigen wasn't always a jumper.

In high school he did baseball and track in the spring season. In the latter, he ran in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays. He took second in state in long jump his senior year - an event which Teigen said he didn't do until the last three weeks of that year - and didn't do triple jump throughout his high school career.

"He is a great young man who would do anything we asked in practice, when he could get there, and wasn't scared to try to do whatever was needed on the track" RHS Boys Track Coach Scott Grochow said in an email to the Tribune. "He still keeps in contact and is a great young man. (I'm) glad I had the chance to coach him."

Teigen said: "The coaching staff in Rugby is a great group of coaches. I would say that I had some of the best track coaches in the state when I was in high school."

Teigen recalls that Grochow and RHS coach Bill Jansen were both present in the stands at his last home meet at U-Mary.

The son of Karen & John Teigen, of Rugby, Aaron said that due to extensive traveling on the weekends as part of the team, he doesn't get to come home as much as he'd like and his parents are what he misses most about Rugby.

"(My parents" try to make it to the meets that are close to home, but work doesn't always allow them to make every single trip," Teigen said. "They have supported me the whole way through school and track."
